September is the month of change: the cooler temperatures, the shorter days, the change in the trees, and the falling leaves. On September 12th of this year, people can honor their beloved pets, who have crossed the "Rainbow Bridge". In 1972, The International Association of Pet Cemeteries and Crematories designated the second Sunday of September as National Pet Memorial Day. It is a special day to honor the dogs and cats, fish and lizards-all that have passed during our lifetimes.
So how is National Pet Memorial day celebrated? By remembering your pet’s favorite activity such as playing Frisbee in the park or walking along the shoreline of a lake or ocean, you can recall all the fun times that you and your pet shared together. It may be as simple as sitting in a chair in the afternoon sunlight which almost certainly your cat enjoyed or going to your local animal shelter and donating atime or money.
September 12th is a day when people can remember the joy received from a pet’s companionship. The unconditional love can remind us how important that love is to our family, our community and ultimately our world.
